Simon Browne calling for an extra 5% effort from Portland United

Friday 05th January 2018

PORTLAND United boss Simon Browne admits he is “getting bored” of the Blues’ winless run ahead of their Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division clash at Bournemouth Poppies tomorrow (3pm).

Browne’s men have endured just one loss in their past six league games, but have drawn the other five – taking their tally of drawn games to a league-high 10 this season.

Now Browne feels the Blues require an “extra five per cent” to convert their goalscoring opportunities and return to winning ways.

He told Echosport: “I’m getting bored of this not winning lark. It’s a while since we had a win, it depends how you look at it.

“If we were down in the bottom reaches of the league we’d be saying six games unbeaten.

“If you don’t win for five or six games you do start looking at it and think what you need to do to start turning some of those draws into wins.

“But we’ll go up and see if we can get the win. The weather doesn’t look good as well. Historically, Bournemouth’s pitch has not been one of the greatest surfaces, so we’ll be mindful of that.

“We’ll go there with the same mindset that we’ve had before. We’re just looking for that extra five per cent to turn chances into goals and get a couple of wins on the board.”

Portland have at least two absentees for the trip to the Poppies, but welcome back another two players in Sam Buckler and Sean Zima.

Browne said: “It’s dependant on personnel. Alex Halloran is unavailable and Ross Doidge picked up an ankle injury on Saturday, he’ll be touch and go as to whether he’s available.

“Shaun Bessant picked up his 10th booking of the season so he’ll be banned for a couple of weeks, but I should have Sam and Sean back.”
